Viadon's team of professionals got together and found a mix of stock and custom parts to mask off the part successfully, and at the lowest cost / greatest efficiency for the company masking personnel.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>The first thing Viadon needed to do was understand what areas on the part were not to be powder coated. An in-person discussion with someone familiar with the part allowed for a good understanding of the coating requirements. Next, Viadon assessed the best methods to mask all areas - balancing time, ease-of-masking, and costs. A mix of stock die cut disks, silicone pull plugs, and a mask for two oddly-shaped, mirror-image areas on one section of the caliper. Stock tape disks and regular green polyester tape cut by hand were eliminated as options due to the additional time it would take to manually cut them.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>Therefore, a custom-shaped high temperature green polyester die cut was evaluated and proposed as the best solution to masking this particular brake caliper part. For the custom die cut, Viadon designed the shape to extend slightly beyond the edges of the metal itself, while hugging the parts profile-outline. This would allow for masking of inconsistent castings so personnel could quickly mask the parts - allowing for some leeway in applying the tape die cuts. The brake calipers themselves are not all perfectly cast, so the tolerance-friendly masking of slightly-oversized die cuts account for variation from part to part.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>Prototypes were made on Viadon's plotter-cutter and tested. The fit was perfect! They asked if Viadon could produce masking tape die cut samples for them to test.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>Our response? \"Of course!\"\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>Our plotter-made samples (turn-around time: Same Day) allowed the customer to test the fit, design, and whether using the custom tape die cut made sense from a time and cost perspective. Ultimately, they decided that a custom silicone masking plug was a better option - that we provided to them too. But the no-cost, quick-turnaround die cut sampling process helped them reach that conclusion in just a few days' time, without having to spend weeks or months with tool-made parts in large production quantities that ultimately did not work for them.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>AND... they didn't have to hand-cut the tape; the parts fit perfectly from their drawings and our plotter-made die cuts. They were able to peel, stick and test, saving huge amounts of time. We worked with this job shop to design some very small, intricate die cut shapes - some as narrow as 0.062\" in width. But before they committed the money to buy a tool, the job shop wanted to test the die cuts first.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>Our response: \"No problem!\" Viadon routinely provides custom die cut tape samples to metal finishers (and even custom aluminum machining job shops!). This allows the customer to test custom parts for fit and performance first.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>Check out the die cut shapes in the image and note how small they are compared to the standard-sized paper clip above them. We showed the customer how to use a small hobby-type knife blade to peel the parts off the clear liner/backing to minimize finger-oil contamination, then place the tape die cut on to the metal itself.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>PRO TIP: And for successful anodizing masking, the tape must be pushed down hard to let the adhesive flow for full stop-off over the next 24 hours. We made sure they were aware of that important aspect of anodizing masking. Otherwise, the anodizing may \"creep\" under the edge of the tape, and cause an uneven look to the masked area.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp>And how did it go with this set of die cuts? - Superbly!
