Plug Positioning
Most often a tapered plug is used to plug blind holes that do not go all the way through a part. Ideally, the plug should rest 1/3 to 1/2 way down into the hole at insertion, for best 'hold' when pushed or twisted in place and for sufficient plug left above for easy removal.
Sizing Guide
When trying to find the best plug for a given hole size, use these general guidelines: Bottom diameter should be 15% smaller than hole diameter; top diameter should be 15% larger than hole diameter.
